Civil Designer III

Position Title: Civil Designer III

Location: San Luis Obispo/Bakersfield

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt; Hourly

Hours: Monday – Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm

(Note: Overtime may be expected as approved by supervisor)

Designer III will be responsible for the independent design and preparation of drawings used in civil engineering projects, such as streets, storm drains, flood control projects, water, sewerage, traffic control, grading (including ADA grading), and erosion control plans, working directly with a Licensed Civil engineer or Project Manager.

1. Design of improvement plans, exhibits and drawings using Civil 3D, working under the direction of a civil designer and a Licensed Civil Engineer.
2. Design of detailed, and rough grading plans for various clientele, such as commercial and industrial developers, and oil field operations, under the direction of a Civil Engineer or Project Manager.
3. Design of improvement plans as required for construction of various civil engineering projects, such as street, storm drain, sewer, water and other underground improvements, using corridors, assemblies, and pipe network.
4. Draw plan and profiles, using Civil 3D design surfaces.
5. Create profiles of flow lines, top of curb, pipelines and subsurface structures.
6. Create geometrically correct site layout for streets and lots.
7. Create geometrically correct site layout for commercial, industrial, and multifamily projects.
8. Plan review and quality control.
9. Engineer’s Estimates.
10. Communication with clients and permitting agencies.
11. Create and manipulate construction details and cross sections.
12. Understand the order of work and method of presentation, based on different drafting requirements for each agency.
13. Finish and duplicate drawings and documentation packages, according to required mediums and specifications for reproduction using blueprinting, photography, or other duplicating methods.
14. Ability to independently address redlined comments from public agency or internal review.
15. Knowledge of building codes and development standards.
16. Understand how to use and interpret common codes, standards & specifications
17. Calculate excavation yardage and prepare graphs and fill-hauling diagrams for use in earth-moving operations.
18. Supervise and train other designers, technicians and drafters.
19. Correlate, interpret, and modify data obtained from topographical surveys, and well plats.
20. Determine quality, cost, strength and quantity of required materials, and enter figures on materials lists.
21. Compile Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans.
22. Perform inspection of various construction items of work, including pipeline installation, paving, and BMP maintenance.

·         Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D

·         Proficient of Civil Engineering concepts

·         Proficient of Microsoft Office programs

·         Great verbal and oral communication

·         Ability to direct and assign work to others

·         Ability to choose the right mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem

·         Ability to work independently

A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineer or related field is preferable but not required.

Background an knowledge in the Land Development Industry

8+ years’ experience using AutoCAD

Drafting/Design special training or certification is preferred

5+ years of progressive design responsibilities
